Sheffied 'Winter Gardens'

Solar control window film can play an important role in protecting precious works of art from the damaging effects of the sun. Films from Bekaert’s SolarGard range for example are helping to protect exhibits at Sheffield’s Millennium Galleries, where extensive glazing brings mixed blessings. By reducing lux levels and solar heat, the SolarGard films help extend the scope of exhibitions which can be accommodated.

Phillip Sowter says: “The galleries, which opened in 2001, have proved highly successful in attracting high profile exhibitions of a level not originally envisaged. A need has therefore arisen to closely control environmental conditions, including lux levels, humidity and temperature, a need complicated by the fact that glass is widely used throughout the building. The SolarGard films make a big contribution and help to control radiant heat as well as light transmission.”

Sheffield based dealer Tintsaway worked with Bekaert’s technical department to assess the project, finally recommending and installing three different films according to differing requirements and glazing materials. Blackout film was installed to arched external windows in five galleries and two further films were installed to the John Ruskin gallery which contains a wide range of works which are highly susceptible to environmental damage, including watercolours, illuminated medieval manuscripts, ornithological prints and fine books. A subtle stainless steel tinted film was installed to a curtain wall between the gallery and the Winter Gardens outside, while a white opaque film was installed to the glazed vaulted roof.

Bekaert’s SolarGard range offers a large number of films providing varying degrees of solar control, according to the nature and extent of the problem. White opaque film for example provides a total ‘white out’ and rejects total solar energy by 86%, while the lightest stainless steel tinted film reduces solar energy by 43%, significantly reducing glare and heat gain while maintaining acceptable levels of natural light. All films reduce UV by 98%. Films are available with subtle metallic tints, strong colours or a highly reflective finish.
